ALAN BAKER - NOW

The wardrobe has shifted away from the door. The wooden frame is in tatters.

“Shit!”

I push myself against the mirrored door, so hard the glass cracks. The shards cut into my arm, but I keep pushing, harder and harder.

Fuck you, Chris!

This is my house!

You’re not getting in!

Paint flakes from around the hinges as the hammering intensifies.

The mirror separates from the door, shattering over me, slicing my hands as I shield my face. The lock buckles. I try to push, but Chris’ arm is already inside my bedroom, reaching with crimson fingers, and snarling like a wild dog. I ram my hip into the wardrobe, ensnaring Chris’ torso. He spots me through lifeless eyes. A stranger behind them. A monster. Not Chris. Not my friend.

The rim of the door cuts into his body, peeling back the skin as he worms through the tiny breach. I keep pushing the wardrobe, trapping his ankle as he crawls across the carpet, hissing, reaching for my leg.

The sound of bone snapping envelops the room.

With a floppy ankle, Chris rises from the floor, and shuffles towards me. I retreat into the corner. On the desk next to me, there’s a paperweight. I throw it at him. The heavy object finds his chest, but the force doesn’t slow him.

“Stay the fuck back, Chris!” I bark, my words shaky, and I pick up the hairdryer. I swing the cord, but I miss his head.

I slam my fist into his nose, but I’m too late.

Guarding my face from his jaws, I scream in agony when Chris buries his teeth into my forearm. Flesh is pulled off the bone like chicken when I haul my arm from his mouth.

Blood squirts from my wrist and I drop to the floor. “You bastard!”

A shadow looms over me as I cower from the hideous creature.

I don’t feel the pain when he bites my thumb off. Or when he chews on my neck, and blood sprays over the white walls. On my brand-new lilac carpet. In my mouth. Down my throat. The red liquid choking me.

The chomping becomes a faint, background noise.

My vision narrows. Becomes blurry.

The sound vanishes. And all I’m left with is guilt.

I’m sorry…

I close my eyes and welcome the darkness.
